The University of Chicago’s Arts + Public Life Arts Lawn, the latest addition to the Arts Block, is a vibrant space that was previously a vacant lot adjacent to the Green Line Performing Arts Center. This revitalized space now contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the neighborhood through a diverse array of community-centered arts programs. The newly transformed open space features various elements enhancing both aesthetics and functionality, including a lawn hill, native garden walk, garden, pavilion, flexible gathering spaces, rain gardens, and a stone sitting area.
The Arts Block is a vibrant collection of cultural and commercial spaces along East Garfield Boulevard between Prairie Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side. It represents an extension of the University's efforts to transform vacant areas along a section of the esteemed Garfield Boulevard into a blend of studios for artists, venues for performances and exhibitions, shops, and spaces dedicated to public programs and education.
