Cloud Gate Plaza is one of Chicago’s most iconic and heavily visited public spaces, framing one of the world’s most recognized sculptures, Cloud Gate (affectionately dubbed “The Bean”).

The Grainer Plaza Gardens reimagine the surrounding landscape, strengthening the dialogue between art, ecology, and visitor experience. The design reinforces Millennium Park’s legacy of artistic and architectural excellence while embracing Chicago’s motto, Urbs in Horto (“City in a Garden”).

Resilience and long-term performance were central to the approach, addressing intense foot traffic and the challenges of on-structure planting with shallow soil depths.

The landscape establishes a visual conversation with the sculpture through softened, cloud-like plant forms that frame Cloud Gate as the jewel at its core. A richly layered palette of groundcovers, perennials, grasses, shrubs, bulbs, and distinctive evergreen trees creates a dynamic sequence that ebbs and flows seasonally. Rather than competing with the sculpture, the gardens amplify its presence through botanical interpretation, while also nodding to the nearby Lurie Garden and other park plantings to create cohesion. Soft textures, airy seedheads, and ethereal color palettes echo the sculpture’s reflective, atmospheric qualities.

Specimen pines and sumac establish an open, sculptural canopy that reinforces the cloud motif. As these native shrubs mature, selective pruning will shape them into living sculptures with floating, umbrella-like forms. Dramatic fall color and persistent winter fruit add seasonal depth, extending visual interest throughout the year. Intimate seating woven into the plantings invites visitors into the garden, transforming passive observation into immersive engagement.

By extending Cloud Gate’s iconic presence through thoughtful botanical design, the gardens demonstrate how plants can elevate high-profile public spaces through conceptual clarity, ecological performance, and horticultural expertise. The resulting landscape is distinctly Chicago, culturally resonant, and built to endure.
