Western Avenue is a major arterial corridor in Chicago, connecting 16 of the city’s 77 community areas. The Western Avenue Corridor Study is a community-based planning initiative to envision an equitable, long-term future for a five-mile section of North Western Avenue, from Addison Street to Howard Street. The scope includes land use, public realm and mobility improvements, future development opportunities, and infrastructure policy recommendations. The study is underpinned by three overarching themes:
1. Thriving places: an active local economy.
2. Safe + attractive streets: a multi-modal and accessible public realm.
3. Resilient communities: sustainable environmental, sociocultural, and economic systems.
The study was developed through a robust community-led process and was officially adopted by the Chicago Plan Commission in November 2022.
