The renovation of Irving Elementary School’s schoolyard replaces the 50 year-old asphalt with natural play systems and plant communities to create vibrant multi-use spaces for both formal and experiential learning. The project is composed of curving paths, pocketed prairie and forested play areas, multi-sport artificial turf play field, basketball courts, musical instruments, rain gardens and sustainable stormwater features, seating areas, outdoor classrooms, and integrated urban agriculture. The design takes its inspiration from the historical hydrology of Oak Park and the outlying regions.
