This newly developed residential district with light commercial entities created a setting for landscape development with median planters at Indiana Avenue. The median planter design was one of the city’s prototype low level planter concepts that were developed in an attempt to create a variety of contextual treatments. Planter heights were determined to preserve maximum visibility.

By developing a “quarter-round” profile, the poured in place planter serves to retain the planting soil, seamlessly transitioning to the decorative paver carriage walk. The colorful planting palette features year-round interest with the textured perennials, evergreens and shade trees. The implementation of this plan has spurred extensive residential development in the South Loop neighborhood, generating a monumental tax base for the city.
