As Chicago’s first neighborhood median landscaped planter projects, the LaSalle Streetscape Project has become the prototype of the Chicago Department of Transportation’s Center Median Improvements Program. The intent of this project was to resurface the deteriorating roadway along this congested thoroughfare while developing highly visible and easily maintained planters along the center medians.

The 2.5 mile long project extended through business districts as well as residential neighborhoods, thus creating the challenge of providing a uniform yet sensitive beautification project. Site Design Group achieved these goals by implementing a series of patterned landscaped plans that were implemented according to each district. An irrigation system along the entire project was the first ever to be installed in a public thoroughfare in Chicago.

Patterned concrete along the carriage walks, a “Chicago Style” planter design with stone copings, and year round landscape interest provided the impact along this six lane roadway. Public safety, neighborhood identity, roadway improvements and creative landscapes has benefited the near north community and the City of Chicago.
