stearns quarry park

As a joint project between three City of Chicago agencies, the twenty seven acre landfill site is being transformed into an educational wetland retention and active recreation park. Nature trails, inherent with the programming for native plantings and a bird habitat, exemplifies the city’s commitment to the environment.

Historically, the site had been utilized as a limestone quarry, and exposed portions of the limestone walls have exceptional geological significance.

In coordination with Weston Engineering and D.I.R.T. Studios, the plan was developed for federal funding, resulting in the 2003 groundbreaking.

Phase 2 of the park development refined the conceptual design into an environmental oasis and learning area within this dense urban setting.
