This planning proposal for redevelopment of a 500 acre industrial area on the near west side of Chicago was proposed to increase the development of the city’s industrial base. Recommendations of urban design treatments included landscaping, the design of gateways, bus shelters, information kiosks and median planters.

The planning process for this expansive area required subdivision into three different zones in an effort to identify separate needs and recommendations for each zone.

Zone A is completely surrounded by residential areas and it is important to establish interaction and cooperation between the industries and their adjacent neighborhoods. Community parks and gardens, outdoor recreational facilities and development of the vacant lots into “green-spaces” were recommended.

Zone B is mostly surrounded by residential neighborhoods also. Although the majority of these properties contained railroad yards, the potential for beautification by cleaning up the embankments and landscaping them to “soften” the edges.

Zone C has the greatest concentration of industries lending itself to a comprehensive “industrial park” development. Scope of work included design development and written recommendations.
