coliseum park

Site development of a new neighborhood public park at Chicago’s rapidly growing Near South Side. Based on historic buildings and neighborhood context, the park development took on a “Coliseum” based theme. Complete with entrance structures, a playground, perennial gardens and a dog run, this park is extremely well utilized by the surrounding community.

The park site is located directly across the street from the old Coliseum Building site, and is adjacent to the elevated train tracks. Only a half acre site, a grand cast stone and ornamental metal entrance pavilion welcomes visitors into the park from the corner of 14th Place and Wabash Avenue, into a tree-lined oasis with a great lawn, perennial gardens, a soft surface tot lot, and a dog playground.

This award-winning project serves as a model for urban “pocket parks”, creating an anchor feature in re-developing neighborhoods.
