A neighborhood branch of the Chicago Public Library system, Budlong Woods Branch Library is the nation’s first LEED-certified public branch library. Serving a changing community on Chicago’s northwest side, the challenges of remediating a contaminated site prior to the building development transformed this urban space into a green oasis.
Native flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses and native perennials shower the site with color and texture throughout the seasons. Recycling of rainwater for the irrigation system, specification of native plantings and reduction of turf grasses led to the contribution of LEED points for the project.
